Heraklion Port

The port of Heraklion is one of the most important maritime hubs in Crete and the Eastern Mediterranean, combining rich historical heritage with modern infrastructure. It is divided into two main sections: the old Venetian harbor and the new, modern port for passengers and cargo.

The Venetian Harbor of Heraklion
The Venetian harbor is located at the end of 25th August Street, the pedestrian walkway that begins in the city center (Meidani, Lions Square) and ends at the fortress of Koules. This historic port today hosts small fishing boats and yachts, preserving its traditional atmosphere.

Dominating the Venetian harbor is the Koules Fortress, one of the most iconic monuments of Heraklion. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century to protect the port, it remains a symbol of the city. Opposite the fortress, at the yacht mooring area, you’ll find the Marina café, and just behind it, the Heraklion Port Authority. Next to it, there is a seafood restaurant. This spot once housed the “Small Koules,” which, along with the main fortress, guarded the entrance to the harbor.

The Venetian Arsenals (Neoria), located nearby, were used for the repair and maintenance of Venetian ships. These historic structures are prime examples of Venetian naval architecture and are open to the public.

From the Venetian harbor, the long breakwater of the new port begins. This breakwater is a popular walking spot for locals, especially on warm summer evenings, as the sea breeze offers relief from the heat. Many Herakliots humorously call it “Bypass Road,” referring to those who have undergone heart surgery and walk the breakwater as part of their doctor-recommended exercise.

Along the breakwater, amateur fishermen patiently await their catch, day and night. Midway down the breakwater, there is a small canteen offering refreshments, ice cream, and light snacks.

The New Port of Heraklion
To the east of the Venetian harbor lies the new, modern port of Heraklion, serving both passengers and freight. This area includes the piers from which boats to Santorini depart, as well as the passenger terminal for ferries to and from Piraeus. Daily routes are available, with most ships departing at night and arriving early in the morning. During the summer, there are also daytime departures.

In recent years, the port of Heraklion has undergone significant upgrades to provide modern services to travelers. The new passenger terminal, with a surface area of 2,500 square meters, offers comfortable waiting areas, temporary luggage storage, and wireless internet access. Additionally, travelers can check in or out for their flights from Heraklion Airport directly from the terminal.

The new port accommodates approximately 2 million passengers annually, including those traveling on daily routes from Piraeus, Santorini, and other islands, as well as visitors from cruise ships that stop in Heraklion for excursions to Knossos and the city center.

The area around the new port also features several seafood restaurants and a large parking lot, allowing easy access to the city center or for leisurely walks along the waterfront.

Heraklion’s port, with its blend of historical depth and contemporary amenities, serves as a vibrant gateway for both locals and visitors. It is a place where the past meets the present, offering a unique and memorable experience to all who pass through.
